Leaving Certificate Applicants: 2H5 & 4O6/H7, Irish, English & a Science subject (i.e. Agricultural Science, Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Physics with Chemistry or Technology) & *H4 Mathematics.

*Applicants who do not achieve the H4 in their Leaving Certificate Mathematics exam can sit the Engineering Mathematics Examination taking place on September 5th 2023. The exam is based on Paper 1 of the Leaving Certificate curriculum. Applicants must achieve at least H4 grade in this exam, along with the other entry requirements, in order to be accepted on to our Electronic Engineering degree (MH304). Applicants under 23 years of age need to have attained at least 350 points in their Leaving Certificate or equivalent plus basic entry requirements.

Categories of applicant:

• School-leavers (Leaving Certificate students)
• Mature students (23 years or older by 1st January in the year of entry to the University/part-time degrees the mature age is 21)
• EU/EFTA/UK students
• International students (outside the EU)
• QQI (Further Education) students
• Transferring students
• Deferring students

Students take the same modules in first, second and third year. In fourth year, students specialise in one of the following three options:

• Electronic Engineering with Computers (COE)
• Electronic Engineering (EEG)
• Electronic Engineering with Communications (COM)

A transfer pathway exists from first year MH201 BSc Science to second year MH304 Engineering for students who have taken Engineering Science, Computer Science, Mathematics and one other subject. Students must attain 50% in the first sitting of first year examinations. There is no limit on places.

• Third year students complete 9 taught modules (5 credits each) over semester 1 & 2, and a community-based PBL (Project Based Learning) module (15 credits) in semester 2.
• Students have two progression routes out of the programme to qualification, depending on their grade average in third year
• In fourth year students specialise in one of the following three options, completing their degree with a BE honours:
  • Electronic Engineering with Computers (COE)
  • Electronic Engineering (EEG)
  • Electronic Engineering with Communications (COM)

OR

Students with a minimum of 2:2 grade (50%) in third year may complete a further 2 years to graduate with an ME in Electronic Engineering.
Work experience is available to students in the fourth year of the 5 year Masters. Students may alternatively choose Erasmus, Study
Abroad or a Research Internship or Project (subject to availability).

Options after graduation?

MH304 Electronic Engineering graduates are highly sought-after in a wide range of engineering and ICT and non-engineering and ICT roles. The Internet, Electronic Commerce, advanced Medical Diagnostic, Treatment Systems, and Transport are all examples of modern human activities dependent on information. Maynooth University engineering graduates are equipped to work in silicon chip manufacturing and design, communications companies and in the development of products closely combining hardware and software.

Beyond electronic engineering, MH304 graduates have the software skills to work in most software companies, and the problem solving and mathematical skills for many roles in the financial, consultancy and management sectors.
