This module provides an introduction to ethics, with a focus on exploring values, social justice, and environmental concerns. Through a range of engaging readings, discussions, and assignments, students will examine different ethical theories and concepts, such as consequentialism, deontology, virtue ethics, and care ethics. The module will also address important ethical issues and debates, including those related to issues of inclusion and social justice, as well as bioethics.
In the inclusion and social justice component, students will explore how different ethical theories can help us better understand and address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Students will also examine how their own experiences and perspectives can shape their ethical reasoning and decision-making, and learn how to engage in respectful and constructive dialogue with those who hold different viewpoints.
In the bioethics component, students will explore ethical questions related to the environment, including climate change, animal ethics, and human enhancement. They will consider different ethical frameworks for thinking about the relationship between humans and nature, and reflect on their own responsibilities towards the environment and non-human living beings.
Overall, this module aims to help students develop the critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills necessary for engaging in ethical inquiry and decision-making. By the end of the module, students will have a deeper understanding of key ethical concepts, as well as a greater appreciation for the importance of inclusion and social justice considerations, as well as environmental concerns, in ethical decision-making.
