The module aims to expose students to the wide variety of styles and ideas in Contemporary Western Art Music. It focuses on the creation of a small, directed portfolio of new works for varying forces, building on the techniques learnt in Creativity & Technique I & II (MU155/156) and Introduction to Composition (MU218). All compositions are accompanied by a preface that explains any non-standard performance practices or notations, and a programme note which illuminates the expressive and technical features of the work.
The module is divided into four blocks, each dealing with an area of compositional exploration embedded in learning from core works from the early modern and contemporary repertoire. Each of the blocks culminates with an assignment that specifically engages with the technical issues dealt with in lectures. There is also a ‘pitstop’ in the middle of each block where assignment drafts are presented in class and feedback offered before the final assignment is submitted, the peer discussion of work being vital to a creative and supportive learning environment for composers.
Visiting International Students in Maynooth for one semester or one academic year should contact the Department of Music for information before registering.
