The objectives are to understand the role of landed estates in the making of the Irish landscape, charting the impact on the landscape of landholding from the medieval period, through the estate system of the 18th and 19th centuries to the post-independence legacy of the Big House and demesne in the 21st century.

Medieval estates, plantation estates, the Landlord system of the eighteenth century, landholding and population impacts in the 19th century, the legacy of Big Houses and demesnes, urban improvements, demise of landed estates, the modern legacy of estate landscapes.
