	Overview
	This module will develop participants� understanding and skills in the areas of leadership and participatory development practice. Through an exploration of theories, debates and practices related to the area, participants will explore the crucial role of leadership in realising change, especially in participatory development contexts. They will develop leadership and group facilitation skills and an understanding of approaches and processes which support community and group participation in critical development processes. Themes addressed will include group dynamics, models and styles of leadership, communication, power and decision-making in groups, the changing role of development practitioners, people-centred and transformative development. It is intended that through this module, students will have developed a constructively questioning attitude towards development work in general, and will be able to articulate this within their own perspectives on what appropriate development practice might look like.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Understand, critique and apply some of the key theories related to leadership, critical development and participatory development practice. Appreciate the difference between participatory and critical development processes and practices and those of other, more hierarchical or mainstream ones. Identify different principles involved in leadership which are relevant to supporting participatory development practice. Demonstrate some leadership and participatory development practice skills relevant for critical development, e.g., critical analysis of development work, group facilitation, decision-making and communication.

Learning Outcomes

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes Repeat students must resit the repeat assignment in the Autumn and submit any outstanding continuous assessment by a date before the Autumn deadline, which will be specified by the department. Students are responsible for familiarising themselves with this deadline. If students do not submit by the deadline, the existing continuous assessment mark will be carried forward to the Autumn. No continuous assessment work will be accepted after this date. This will apply except upon presentation of a medical certificate covering the relevant period or in other extremely extenuating circumstances, which must be communicated to, and accepted by, the lecturer prior to, or immediately after, the relevant deadline.
