Module LEADERSHIP AND PARTICIPATORY DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE

Module code: KD212
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
International: Yes
Overview Overview

This module will develop participants’ understanding and skills in the areas of leadership and participatory development practice. Through an exploration of theories, debates and practices related to the area, participants will explore the crucial role of leadership in realising change, especially in participatory development contexts. They will develop leadership and group facilitation skills and an understanding of approaches and processes which support community and group participation in critical development processes. Themes addressed will include group dynamics, models and styles of leadership, communication, power and decision-making in groups, the changing role of development practitioners, people-centred and transformative development. It is intended that through this module, students will have developed a constructively questioning attitude towards development work in general, and will be able to articulate this within their own perspectives on what appropriate development practice might look like.
