Module UNDERSTANDING GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT

Module code: KD157
Credits: 7.5
Semester: 1
Department: INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
International: Yes
Overview Overview

This module explores different aspects of global development, the challenges we face at a global level and how we can create a better, more just and sustainable world. Participants are introduced to, and encouraged to critique, different theories and practices which affect economic, social, political, cultural and environmental development at local and global levels, including the sustainable development goals (SDGs). We examine different causes of poverty, inequality, conflict and injustice around the world and the role of governments, businesses, development organisations and global activist movements in relation to them. Throughout, we place emphasis on how we can realise more inclusive and sustainable futures, e.g., through socially responsible business practices, climate justice, alternative development practices, decolonialism, gender equality and human rights approaches to development.
