Overview Overview

This module is designed to generate an understanding of the centrality of language in the development of young children, particularly in terms of the relevant theoretical perspectives. It explores dimensions of early language development and literacy and its significance within Aistear The Early Childhood Curriculum Framework. Students will discover how playful experiences and literacy-rich environments contribute to language and literacy development. The features of bilingualism and multilingualism in young children will be reviewed with a particular emphasis on how educators support language learning in early year’s environments with young children from multilingual families. Students will identify the challenges of speech language and communication needs (SLCN) in the young child and will explore the importance of collaboration with family and engagement with other professionals and professional organisations in support of all children’s learning, well-being and development.
