• Examine aspects of Irish social policies relating to all children, their families and the early childhood education and care sector and discuss the implications of contemporary policy development to practice and to services.
• Outline the structure of the Irish Legal System, with relevance to early years and the implications of legislation for early childhood education and care practices, including issues of inclusion.
• Examine legislation in relation to the impact on ECEC settings of family formations and re-formations, guardianship, etc. and policies in relation to same.
• Assess the impact of international legislation, directives and frameworks on Irish social policy development relating to ECEC settings with particular emphasis on the United Nations Convention on Rights of the Child.
• Compare and contrast the role and purpose of a range of voluntary and statutory agencies that support children, families and ECEC services.

• Lectures, seminars, case-study scenarios, experiential exercises, group discussions and independent learning.

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): This module will be assessed through a range of work which can include: Reflective journal, Presentation, Essay, etc.
