Module CURRICULUM: ORIGIN, THEORY AND PRACTICE

Module code: ED898
Credits: 15
Semester: 2
Department: EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Majella Dempsey (EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

Curriculum Studies is enjoying a period of resurgence which now addresses the theory-practice divide. This renaissance is timely, as the new millennium has also witnessed the formation of new variants of curriculum policy, variously categorised as learner-centred and technical-instrumental by advocates and opponents. These new policy forms have been controversial on a number of fronts, notably concerning the place of knowledge in the curriculum, and the demands of preparing citizens to live in modern pluralist democracies.
This module will look at curriculum theory, educational policy, and pedagogy and its enactment. Against a backdrop of globalisation in for example economical, communicative, social justice and everyday domains, it will examine transnational policy discourses and comparative studies. Various theoretical lenses will be used to analyse 'curriculum' bringing together curriculum theory and critical educational studies with practical examples of teaching for social justice to argue for a transformative curriculum that challenges existing inequity in social, educational, and economic relations.
