	Overview
	The aim of this module is to consider the approach taken towards disabled people in Irish society. It will critique the current systems and seek other approaches based on human rights as a more just and suitable alternative. The module will explore theoretical perspectives from critical disability studies. Concepts surrounding access, barriers, exclusion and the range and degree of impairments will be analysed in the context of disability awareness. Policies and their impact on the disability community will be considered.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Able to critically evaluate their perceptions of disability. Understand the influence the medical model has on disabled people and how it effects their being active members of society. Identify how disabled people are excluded in education, employment, transport, housing, and social activities. Become conscious of their own conceptions and misconceptions of disability as they engage with differing viewpoints and encounter voices of lived experience. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect and acknowledge their responsibility within the inclusion of disabled people.

Assessment

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes For autumn resit, the major assignment only may be submitted. There will be no re-submission of other continuous assessment components. Marks received during the semester in respect of in-class tests, presentations, minor assignments etc., will be carried over. Essays/projects for autumn resit must be submitted by 1 August and may be subject to a cap.
