On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Compare and contrast the different pattern recognition receptors, their ligands and signalling pathways.
• Discuss viral immune evasion strategies targeting different aspects of anti-viral immunity.
• Describe how allografts are rejected by the immune system of a transplant recipient. Describe how self-tolerance is normally maintained and discuss how we could apply this knowledge to induce tolerance to allografts.
• Discuss how self-tolerance can be broken and lead to the occurrence of auto-immunity.
• Discuss the interplay between components of the innate and adaptive immune response.
• Describe how the dendritic cell can lead to the activation of naïve CD8+ T cells through the cross-presentation pathway.
• Explain in detail the intracellular signalling events involved in T cell activation and differentiation into the various effector T cells during an immune response.
• Describe the effector functions of Th17 and T regulatory cells and their relevance to disease states.
