This module will explore a range of theories from philosophy that helps us to think carefully about the purpose of education in society. It introduces students to influential philosophical ideas in the field of adult education which are sometimes described as radical, humanistic, progressive, liberal and behaviourist. Students will encounter key thinkers such as Paulo Freire, Jack Mezirow, Carl Rogers and bell hooks but will also be encouraged to look beyond the traditional philosophical canon. Overall, the main purpose of the module is to offer concepts and theories which will develop students’ capacity to critically reflect on their own practice, to develop their own philosophy of education, and challenge some of the ways we traditionally think about the purpose of education.
80% attendance is required for this module.
