The world economy is increasingly characterised as a service economy with the service sector becoming a vital contributing factor to world economic growth. For a majority of the world’s economies, the services sector is by far the biggest employer. However, companies struggle to develop and communicate service solutions that meet customer needs, create a competitive advantage and can be provided in a sustainable way. The service design and innovation module teaches students design thinking methods to develop useful, usable and desirable services from the customer’s point of view; and effective, efficient and competitive services from the service provider’s point of view. This is achieved through a combination of design and business orientated theory and hands-on learning through applied service design research, tools and methodologies. Continuous assessment is used to reflect industry practice and provide students with the confidence and experience to apply service innovation methods when out in industry (private and public sector).
