• distinguish between different types of phrase structures and musical forms (both with and without scores).
• understand, recall and apply basic instrumental characteristics and technique for standard orchestral instruments and voices.

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Assignments in critical listening, orchestral score reading, analysis, orchestration and arrangement. Full details in module guide.

• Pass standard: 40%
• Could the result of this module be capped? Work submitted for the first time in August without mitigating circumstances will be capped at 40%.
• Penalties: Non-attendance without approved mitigating circumstances will result in a proportionate deduction from the overall module mark. See the Undergraduate Handbook of the Department of Music for further details.

• Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes
• Continuous assessment marks are carried forward to the autumn. Specifically: I. Critical Listening (CL) Component: CL Assignments 1 and 3 are continuous assessment and cannot be repeated. If the module is failed, only CL Assignments 2 and 4 may be repeated in the Summer resit examinations; you are expected to contact the module coordinator directly if this applies to you to discuss resubmission. II. Orchestration and Arrangement (O&A) Component: O&A Assignments 1 & 2 are continuous assessment and cannot be resubmitted. If the module is failed, only O&A Assignment 3 may be repeated in the Summer resit examinations; you are expected to contact the module coordinator directly if this applies to you to discuss resubmission. N.B. Work presented for the first time in the Autumn Supplemental Examination Session will be capped at 40% in the absence of fully proven mitigating circumstances.
