This module will examine the theory and practice underpinning the integration of language, literacy, mathematics, and scientific enquiry across the curriculum and will explore ways of developing conceptual knowledge and understanding through a cross-curricular approach and the integration of other subjects into these subject lessons. Through this student teachers gain an insight into the concepts, skills, and practical methodologies (station teaching, guided discovery, fieldwork, hands-on learning, problem solving, reflective practice, outdoor learning, digital learning, and talk and discussion) required for inclusive high-quality teaching and learning for all pupils underpinned by Froebelian philosophy. Through offering space for professional dialogue, student teachers will continue to explore their professional identity and agency as a teacher in primary schools.
The development of language and literacy in both English and Gaeilge will be studied in this module. The use of Content and Language Integrated learning (CLIL) in the teaching of Gaeilge will be explored and the implications for practice reflected upon. Inclusive practices for supporting children learning English as an Additional Language will be reviewed with emphasis on home-language maintenance and the transferability of methodologies and approaches within the Irish-language curriculum to quality teaching and learning for all pupils.
In terms of Language and Literacy, Mathematics, and Science, this module further develops student teachers’ understanding and application of relevant theories for the effective linkage, integration, assessment, and differentiation of language, mathematics, and scientific enquiry in teaching and learning. Student teachers will examine, select and apply a wide range of strategies to support children’s literacy, communicative skills, and engagement with literature across the curriculum and also apply a wide range of strategies to support children’s mathematical and scientific enquiry through an integrated-curriculum approach.

Student teachers will explore the role and impact of digital skills for educational issues around language, literature, literacy, mathematics, numeracy, and science. Student teachers further develop their understanding of professional relationships and importance of collaboration with parents and families in the development of language, literacy, mathematics, and science education.
