Students will be introduced to the history and progression of video games and video game design up to the present day, and in this context be able to analyse and discuss modern video games. The academic field of games user research and gamer motivation profiling will be explored in relation to the practical elements of video game design, including modern game engines, languages, and related tools. The course will teach students to critically discuss and assess essential video game narrative and gameplay elements using industry terminology and following a framework. Modern industry-based software tools will be used in practical lab work – specifically gaming engines (e.g., e.g., Unreal or Godot), 3D graphics software to create game assets (e.g., Blender) as well as other tools.
