To become a professional accountant, you need to successfully complete three levels of professional exams as well as on the job training. Mature students - Information:

Mature student applicants are 23 years or older by 1st January in the year of entry to the University. For part-time degrees the mature age is 21. Admission is based on application and/or interview. O4/H7 Mathematics or equivalent recommended.

Apply to the CAO by February 1st 2022. Late applications from mature students may be accepted after this date - consult the Undergraduate Studies website for updates. Application may not be made to the CAO after May 1st 2022.

Mature students must complete the CAO section for mature applicants fully, indicating clearly past or current studies, and outlining educational goals and objectives. Applicants are assessed on the basis of the information provided on their CAO application form. All questions should be answered in full.

Mature student applicants who have a disability

If you have a disability or specific learning difficulty (e.g. dyslexia), and require examination support for any written tests that may apply as a mature student applicant (to any of our degrees), please submit supporting documentation by 15 March 2022 to the Access Office. Unfortunately we are unable to consider applications for alternative examination accommodation after this deadline.

How to apply

Course structure

First year

15 credits of Accounting (group 6), or 30 credits of Accounting (Group 6). For those who took the 15 credit Accounting subject there is an option to take another 7.5 credits of Accounting in the 2nd semester
Plus choose another 2 or 3 other subjects or Critical Skills from the 5 groups available so as to have 60 credits overall in first year.

Second & third year

Take Accounting and one other subject to degree level (as a Double Major)
Optional 10 credit Electives in second year

Apply to transfer into one of our specialised degrees in Accounting having achieved 60% or more in first year Accounting (MH403/MH407/ MH502 LWA - subject to conditions being met).

New transfer option in second year - into the new Business and Languages degree MH409 - for students who have completed the first year of the BA degree (MH101) taking Accounting and either German or Spanish (passing 30 credits of beginners/15 credits of non-beginners’ language).

O4/H7 Leaving Certificate Mathematics recommended.

Students may apply to study overseas after second year (on Erasmus or Study Abroad) and graduate with a BA (International) after 4 years. See the International Studies website for details.

Year 1

ACCOUNTING

You will study Accounting (the language of finance and business) along with up to three other Arts subjects in first year.
The unique flexibility of the MU Arts programme provides you with the option of transferring in to one of our designated accounting programmes at the end of first year.

Understanding the language of Accounting will be advantageous to you if you work in a business or set up your own business.
By choosing to study accounting, you could also pursue a career in teaching.
The extensive range of subjects available in the BA programme allows you to combine the study of accounting with other subjects that suit your interests. No prior knowledge of accounting is required, as we teach it from first principles.
Become a highly sought-after graduate possessing the technical accounting and transferable skills required of future business leaders which allows students to pursue rewarding career opportunities.

Only one of these can be taken as a double subject since the extra 15 credits for each are taught at the same time: Anthropology, Computer Science, German (beginner), History, International Development, Law, Sociology, Spanish (beginner).
Recommend O4/H7 Leaving Certificate Mathematics.
AC1V30 is the option that should be chosen if you wish to transfer to a denominated degree in Accounting in year 2 namely MH403 (FNAC), MH407 (BUSAC) or MH502 LWA or to maximise professional Accounting exemptions.

	Career options: While graduates of MH403, MH407 and MH502 are particularly well placed to pursue a professional accountancy qualification, our accounting programmes prepare students for a variety of careers in both the private and public sectors, and in every industry.
