In common with the world of finance, our MSc Finance and Regulation is an intensive and challenging programme. We begin with a preparatory Autumn School to integrate students from different backgrounds and ensure that all students have the required levels of Finance, Maths and statistics to succeed in the programme. Students will also be introduced to computer skills essential to modern finance. We then have two semesters of taught modules, during which Finance modules are taught over four days per semester and Law modules have one 2-hour session per week. Our new Summer School, featuring a taught module in Data Management and Financial Analytics is designed to provide students with practical experience in software used across the industry, while a capstone project completes the programme.

Organisations today realise that data analytics is a critical competitive capability to survive in the new era of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence. Businesses now have abundance of data at their disposal generated from traditional functions such as sales and operations, but also, more recently, from social media and the Internet of Things. That has made the volumes and variety of data of value to businesses very large, effectively dubbed as the Big Data era. Mining data and finding insights of value to businesses is a crucial process to move from raw and seemingly messy data, to organised insights supporting evidence-based management. For example, classifying free-text tweets of consumers opinions of a certain company’s product into positive, neutral and negative sentiments can help the company identify potential issues and deal with them in a proactive manner. This MSc in Business Analytics is for graduates with degrees that include quantitative techniques such business, management, mathematics, physics, and others, who would be interested in applying quantitative analytics in business, including in commercial, governmental and non-governmental organisations. If you are interested in a business career but did not take an undergraduate degree in business, then this is the programme for you. This MSc introduces students to a range of business management topics, including organisational behaviour, global operations, finance, strategy, marketing, international business, career planning and development, sustainability in business and research techniques. We start at a foundational level and rapidly escalate to develop student knowledge to the level of postgraduate expertise. A variety of teaching approaches are applied across the programme to help participants to develop a clear career strategy that will increase their employability in the short-term, and sustainable success in the long term. This MSc provides key business learning to non-business graduates (and experienced professionals who do not have an undergraduate degree). The new Master’s in Environmental Psychology aims to ensure graduates develop a critical understanding of how our actions shape the world and how our environments impact upon us. Environmental psychology is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the interplay between individuals and their surroundings. In addition to expert contributions from a range of sub-disciplines in psychology (e.g. cognitive, health, clinical, and research) contributions from geography, biology, digital marketing and environmental science are integral to the programme. The recognition of the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and the UN Sustainable Development Goals provide an appropriate global backdrop to this programme. Key topics include social and climate justice, nature-based therapies and mental health, nature-based solutions and sustainability, ecological and personal thriving, and innovation in our assessment of the environment as a facilitator, shaper and consequence of human behaviours. The Masters also ‘puts environmental psychology in its place’ locally; highlighting the unique Maynooth Green Campus initiative and other natural assets including the Royal Canal Greenway. Given the wider development of Citizen GIS and an increased public awareness and knowledge of the power and value of spatial data, vastly increased amounts of such data from different sources are now available to researchers. However, in order to turn these data into useful information, they must be efficiently managed, processed and analysed before being displayed in a comprehensible format. Geographical Information Systems and the associated field of Remote Sensing greatly aid us in such tasks. The course is equally split between both parts - GIS and Remote Sensing - with four core modules introducing the theory and practice of both subject at an introductory and advanced level. Geographical Information Systems or GIS as they are better known, are widely used in a wide variety of subject fields across the physical and social sciences and even in the humanities, with applicability in everything from archaeology and astronomy to geomorphology and globalisation to soil science and social planning. Remote Sensing – the analysis and interpretation of aerial and satellite imagery – has transformed the manner in which we view the Earth. The synoptic view of the Earth that it has given us has greatly improved our understanding of atmospheric and oceanic processes, sustained environmental management and the interaction of humans with the natural world. It is now a standard research tool in many fields such as geology, geography, pollution control, agriculture and climatology. Additional optional modules in Programming, Spatial Databases and Marine Remote Sensing are also available to students who want to develop the technical side more fully, though the course has a strong applied flavour throughout. In addition, all students complete a work placement in the summer months which allows them to gain valuable practical experience to test and develop the skills learnt across the course. The MSc in GIS and Remote Sensing is accredited by both the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in the UK. Graduates of this MSc are eligible to proceed along the pathway to become Chartered Geomatics Surveyors. This programme utilises the educational resources provided by the School of Business and the knowledge found at the Innovation Value Institute (IVI) - a research centre within the university - to respond to the need for educational offerings in the management and governance of both established IT systems and new digital technologies. This intensive course is designed to provide a pre-professional qualification equivalent to a bachelor degree in psychology and, as such, offers a conversion route for graduates who hold an honours degree in Psychological Studies or equivalent. The Robotics and Embedded AI MSc will provide graduates in computing, engineering and cognate disciplines with specialised training in the design and control of intelligent machines. Robotics is a multi-disciplinary field of study requiring skills in computing, electronics and mechanical engineering.
Teamwork, innovation and the validation of science through practice are central to this success in this field. The programme has a large team project each semester where students explore the application of the theories of robotics with a focus on design thinking and innovation in the first semester and system realisation and evaluation in the second semester. In the third semester, they undertake a large independent research project in partnership with industry or the robotics research group.
The programme builds on the strong foundations of Maynooth’s undergraduate degrees in Computer Science (CS) and Robotics and Intelligent Devices (RID) undergraduate programmes. Many of the specialised 4th-year modules from these programmes are part of the MSc degree. They are supplemented by specialised training in deep learning, augmented reality, human-robot interaction, robot ethics and cognitive robotics.
Given the diverse backgrounds of the student intake, the programme provides two main pathways:
1. students from a computing background are introduced to the engineering principles of control theory, digital signal processing and robotics.
2. for students coming from an engineering or robotics background, some courses focus on AI, deep learning and computation.
The dissertation research project will be available in two forms: a traditional project based in an academic research lab or a project undertaken as part of an internship with robotics firms who are supporting the programme, such as Eiratech Robotics, Combilift, Intel, Ubotica, Fanuc Robotics, Akara Robotics, Otherlab, etc.
Upon graduation, the students will be thoroughly grounded in robotics theory and cutting-edge research. They will also have developed transferable skills in design thinking, innovation and teamwork. And finally, they will have demonstrated their newfound skills by completing a research project at the cutting edge of robotics and embedded AI.

The M.Sc. in Social Research is a taught Master's programme that can be completed in one year, full-time or in two years on a part-time basis. It is aimed at: - Graduates in the social sciences or related fields who want to develop their research skills and seek research-based employment;

The MSc in Social Research at MU Sociology provides hands-on training in research skills with real-world data, and instruction from staff with a passion for evidence-based research. You will work with real-world data, gaining familiarity with the toolkit of modern data-driven social research. The M.Sc. programme consists of 4 compulsory modules (Working With and Sourcing Data, Principles of Social Science Research, Quantitative and Qualitative Methods and Digital Methods) and one elective module (Theorising Transition/Political Economy, Digital Societies, Nature and Society, Families and Generations, Working Lives Transition, or Intimate Lives Transition). The MSc in Strategy and Innovation is suited to participants interested in a career in general management or senior management. It builds on participants’ prior education and/or business experience to develop managerial competencies in high level functions of strategy, innovation, leadership and financial management. This is a taught masters programme with a significant applied research project. The format provides participants with an excellent opportunity to learn both in-depth and state-of-the-art content on the taught modules and then apply that new learning in a business consulting, dissertation or placement project. All of the content brings participants up to speed with the latest research on the topics covered and the module facilitators then guide them in the application of that literature to real-word challenges. Successful participants leave the programme with an ability to make a meaningful contribution to organisations at a strategic level. The innovation component of the programme provides participants with a tool kit to analyse business arenas and identify opportunities that can be exploited. Participants will explore innovation processes in organisations while also examining entrepreneurship and how entrepreneurial thinking can shape innovation outcomes. Together with an examination of leadership challenges, participants explore theories of leadership from classic approaches through to contemporary concepts and ideas. These are set in the context of the changing nature of work and society, where the process of leadership and the complex relationships they manage are considered. The financial management aspect of the programme will provide participants, regardless of their experience or education in finance or accounting, with the core skills to read and interpret key financial reports of profit and loss (P & L), balance sheets, and cash flow. Participants will also learn how to evaluate investment decisions and conduct key ratio analysis to gain insights into an organisation’s financial strength. The key strategy section of the programme is taught across two components. The first develops the skills needed to analyse business environments, industries and organisational capabilities in the context of the changing nature of strategy, competition and business models. The second provides an opportunity for guided application of the core strategy concepts to an industry and organisation during the Strategy Live experience. The most recent addition to the programme is an in-depth and focussed module on sustainability in business where participants will learn about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and how organisation can respond to the challenges we face. Participants will also get extensive guidance on career planning and development and work through a structured process to evaluate their own competencies, aspirations and develop structured career plans. The applied research aspect of the programme provides participants with an opportunity to systematically integrate their new knowledge from the programme and apply it to an industry, business or challenge of interest. Most participants will take the Business Consulting Project module. Typically, full-time students will be linked with an organisation arranged by the School of Business, and for part-time students it is an opportunity to develop significant insights into their own organisations. When available, a Placement Project (full-time mode only) may be an alternative to the Business Consulting Project. A Dissertation alternative is also available in some limited circumstances, with the guidance of an academic member of staff. There are also (optional) opportunities throughout the year to attend the research seminars delivered by academic staff and visitors. Programme Schedule The full-time programme runs over 12 months (3 semesters) from September each year. Participants on the part-time programme take the same classes as the full-time participants and the module load is spread over two years. This course is intended introduce graduates in theoretical physics, mathematics, and related disciplines to current ideas and methods at the forefront of modern theoretical physics and mathematics research, including
• Topics in theoretical physics: gravitation and cosmology, fluid mechanics, condensed matter physics, quantum information and subatomic physics.
• Topics in pure mathematics: functional analysis, algebraic and differential topology, representation theory, Riemannian and non-Riemannian geometry.
Although the topics are diverse, there are commonalities which mean that the same mathematical and numerical methods can often be used in different fields, and there are many intersections between these topics. This MSc will also introduce descriptions and methods originally developed in theoretical physics and mathematics, which have found application in a wide range of other fields including biological systems, finance and computer science. It introduces students to the forefront of current research through a supervised project and may serve as an entry point to a research degree.
