The PhD programme in Finance at Maynooth University builds on the foundation developed in the MSc Finance or MSc Economic and Financial Risk Analysis programme. The MSc programmes provide the basic skills and technical knowledge base via taught courses and a directed thesis, while the PhD programme seeks to further students’ skills and knowledge to enable them to do independent, world-class research.

The four-year programme of study includes in the first and possibly subsequent years reading courses, taught courses, general skills seminars, and independent research. The second, third and the fourth years of the programme are dedicated primarily to research knowledge and independent research. The PhD candidate must write and present an original piece of research in each year of the programme, and this research must meet the approval of his/her advisory committee.

Students who do not fulfil the ongoing requirements of the PhD programme may be eligible for an M.Litt degree with the completion of a satisfactory M.Litt thesis.

The PhD programme is available to both full-time and part-time students. The performance benchmarks for part-time PhD students are analogous to those of full-time, except that the full-time year one and year two requirements (see below) are extended by one year each; the full-time year one requirements must be completed by the end of part-time year two and the full-time year two requirements must be completed by the end of part-time year four. The full-time year three and four requirements apply to part-time years five and six. Prospective candidates should bear in mind that applicants for the part-time PhD programme are not eligible for scholarship funding.
