Teaching Council of Ireland (TCI) requirements. ONLY relevant for students wishing to pursue a career in 2nd level teaching. All other students should ignore. Students who wish to pursue a career in 2nd level teaching, with Business as one of their teaching subjects, are required by the Teaching Council of Ireland (TCI) to complete 10 ECTS in Accounting and 10 ECTS in Economics (as well as at least 60 ECTS in Business) in order to be able to teach Business Studies at Junior Cert and Leaving Cert level. This is only relevant for students who wish to pursue a career in 2nd level teaching, that is, for students that will take the required postgraduate Teaching qualification after their Arts degree award. During the second year of your programme, all Arts students have the option to take Accounting in semester one and semester two. The semester one Accounting module (AC210) is compulsory and MUST be taken by all students unless students have studied Accounting as one of their other first year Arts subjects. The semester two module in Accounting (AC211) is optional and should be chosen to ensure students attain the required 10 ECTS in Accounting during their Business as a subject in Arts programme. If you have already attained 10 ECTS in Accounting, then you must NOT take any further Accounting modules during your Business in Arts programme. During semester one on the second and third year of your programme, all Arts students have the option to take an Economics module: EC101a in semester 1 of year 2; EC102 in semester 1 of year 3. These Economics modules should be chosen by students to ensure attainment of the required 10 ECTS in Economics (required by TCI) during their Business as a subject in Arts programme. If you have already studied Economics and have the required 10 ECTS in Economics, then you must NOT take these Economics options on the Business in Arts programme.

This is only relevant for students who wish to pursue a career in 2nd level teaching, that is, for students that will take the required postgraduate Teaching qualification after their Arts degree award. If you already have attained 10 ECTS in Accounting and 10 ECTS in Economics, then you must NOT take any additional Accounting or Economics modules on the Business programme. During the second year of your programme, all Arts students have the option to take Accounting in semester one and semester two, thereby attaining the required 10 ECTS in Accounting. In semester 1 year 2 and in semester 1 year 3, students should take the Economics options in order to attain the required 10 ECTS in Economics. For the 2015-16 academic year, the School of Business has included one Economics module option during the first semester for 3rd year Business in Arts students. Students wishing to attain TCI accreditation should take this module – EC102 (Introduction to Macroeconomics). To make up the remaining 5 ECTS required in Economics, students are advised to contact their other Subject department to request exchanging an optional module in the first semester on that subject with an Economics module. Permission is granted at the discretion of that respective department and is subject to Timetabling restrictions. Students may also take any outstanding modules required after graduation, as an occasional student (relevant module fees apply – please contact Admissions for further details). The Economics modules recommended are two introductory Economics modules, namely Introduction to Macroeconomics (ECI02) which is the option on the programme structure for the School of Business, and Microeconomics (Markets, Welfare and Consumer Choice) (EC101a). However, the TCI have not specified any particular Economics modules, so students may wish to investigate if other Economics modules may be appropriate for them/their timetable. These two introductory modules are currently timetabled in semester one of the academic year. If you still require 5ECTS in Economics and have already taken the Economics option on offer via the School of Business programme (EC102), then you have two options: 1) contact the School of Business administration office to opt out of the EC102 Economics module in exchange for a different Economics module on offer in the first semester. 2) take any outstanding Economics module post-graduation as an occasional student (relevant module fees apply – please contact Admissions for further details).
Students must not take EC327 if they have completed it in 2nd year.
HY357 cannot be taken with SG307 or SG308.
Students may take PO301, SO331 but only if they have not chosen it under Politics (POH300).
