This module builds on its counterpart in Year 1 by exploring further aspects of, and approaches to, social work theory, with a particular emphasis on those that (a) relate to contemporary developments in social theory more generally and (b) directly inform anti-oppressive practice. The commitment of social work to social justice and human rights is developed with a focus on the philosophy of rights and the multifaceted nature of power. As in Year 1, emphasis will be placed on the integrative understanding of social science theories and concepts, including psychological and sociological perspectives on human agency and social structure. - Contemporary critical social issues and their implications for social work practice. - The philosophy of rights; natural, social and discursive approaches. - Power and/in social work – multidisciplinary perspectives. - Equality, diversity and social work (specific issues and identities; intersectionality).
