The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the theories, principles, values and ethics that inform professional social work practice. Students are expected to critically engage with areas such as: conceptions of social justice, equality and rights; social work ethics and values; theoretical approaches and perspectives in social work; and social work as a ‘social profession’. A component of this module addresses the application of theory into professional practice. Students will explore the application of ethical theory in practice contexts. This will include a critical evaluation of the CORU/SWRB Code of Ethics and Conduct and CORU/SWRB Standards of Proficiency. Principles and processes relating to fitness to practice will also be introduced and discussed. There is frequent cross referencing to the modules on Social Work Issues and Methods and on Professional Development and Fieldwork Placement.
