	Overview
	This module focuses on the ways in which contemporary graphic novels mediate and critically reflect upon cultural, societal, and political issues. Students will also have the opportunity to work with online tools to create their own short cartoons and graphic texts, and they will be encouraged to consider how their creative scripts might equally inspire reflection on social and cultural problems. The module may appeal to creative writers, as well as students of anthropology, design innovation, and media studies. Since students will use online tools to generate images and design vignettes, no drawing skills are necessary. Students of Spanish and Latin American Studies will analyse Spanish-language vignettes and graphic novels and will be expected to produce Spanish-language cartoons and graphic texts.

Penalties: Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate). Penalties: Late submission of assessed coursework or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5 marks per day. Assessed coursework or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the relevant submission deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
