Module HYBRID CULTURES IN THE LITERATURE AND VISUAL ARTS OF LATIN AMERICA

Module code: SPA345
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: SPANISH
International: Yes
Overview Overview

This module focuses on the literature and visual-cultural artefacts which have shaped perceptions of Latin America. Students will critically assess the work of a selection of seminal writers, artists and photographers whose works continue to prove influential in today’s galleries and in literature. Each work will be set initially in its socio-cultural context(s). The topics begin with a focus on the important themes of mestizaje identity and political conflict in Latin America. We will use these two approaches to study the use of magical realism and the representation of indigeneity in Latin American art and literature. The writers and artists that you will study are among the following: Juan Rulfo, Diego Rivera, Gabriel García Márquez, José María Arguedas and Martín Chambi.
