Module THEORISING TRANSITIONS

Module code: SO694
Credits: 10
Semester: 1
Department: SOCIOLOGY
International: No
Overview Overview

This module explores contemporary social change through key transitions in modern world history. The module explores theories of social transformation through an examination of major transitions, including for example: the development of capitalism on a world scale; the intertwining of state and citizenship; changing gender relations in the public and private spheres; transnational racial orders from colonialism to globalisation; and environmental trends and crises. The module also undertakes a comparative analysis of different pathways through these transitions, examining similarities and differences across primarily ‘advanced capitalist’ countries and their networks. The implications of these transformations and pathways for key issues such as inequality, environmental crises and the degradation of citizenship are considered throughout the module.
