This course introduces students to the core ideas and skills associated with scientific research and communication of scientific information. It aims to equip students with tools required to find and evaluate scientific data, write technical reports and present scientific information effectively to different audiences in various formats. The main issues dealt with in this module will be: • Finding and assessing scientific information • Standards of evidence in science and how this varies between disciplines. Sources of evidence • Effective use of tabular and graphical forms of data presentation • Formal reporting, including writing of structured documents Formal team working skills will also be introduced and developed throughout the semester. Student work will be focused around a group project informed by the other subjects that the students are taking.
