Module BOOKS, READING AND WRITING IN MEDIEVAL IRELAND, C.1200-1650

Module code: SK110
Credits: 7.5
Semester: 2
Department: CENTRE FOR TEACHING & LEARNING
International: No
Overview Overview

The anchor lectures - by cutting-edge research-led teachers - will focus on manuscripts and books as artefacts and explore production and use of Irish manuscripts and books from the late twelfth to the middle of the seventeenth centuries, using the Russell library's rich resources as a focal point. It is envisaged that some of the anchor lectures will take the form of workshops, in order to encourage students to apply what they have learned in tutorials to an in-class discussion with members of staff.

Tutorials to consist of:
• 12 paleography and diplomatic classes (one per week), in which we will facilitate the development of specific skills e.g. identifying and reading selected scripts.
• 12 universal critical skills classes (one per week), in which the students will be introduced to a variety of critical skills topics, using material and learning from the anchor lectures and palaeography and diplomatic classes e.g. developing an understanding of scholarship as a conversation (using Wikipedia assignment), enhanced reflective learning, academic writing skills and, teamworking for group presentations.
