This module will introduce students to the major themes of modern Irish history from 1800 to 1920. Examining pivotal events such as the Act of Union 1801, Catholic Emancipation 1829, the Famine 1845-53, emigration, land, nationalism and revolution; students will be introduced to the most important secondary reading on these topics, while also examining some of the more crucial primary source documents. In order to get a fuller understanding of how history is written and conducted, students will debate and review these works in group work.
