The distinction between science and pseudo-science, and its relevance for psychology; Fundamental assumptions in psychology – its definitions, subject matter and impacts; Philosophy of science for psychology; Paradigms and approaches to psychological enquiry; The relationship between psychology and culture; Insights from modern philosophy for psychology; What psychology can learn from other disciplines (social and natural sciences, and humanities); Public perceptions of and misconceptions about psychology. Module Objective: To explore contemporary controversies and issues in psychology and to develop a critical view of psychology as a modern meaningful discipline.
