This course will provide a broad historical overview of the history of American philosophy, starting with Puritanism and culminating in classical Pragmatism. It will identify dominant continuities and themes in that history, such as “experience,” “community,” and “renewal,” as well as major shifts and changes. It will examine both the main social and political conditions to which American philosophy responded and how it in turn has contributed to the shaping of American history. Its principle aim is to provide a solid foundation upon which students might conduct further, more specialized study into various aspects of American philosophy, both historical and contemporary.
