	Overview
	Everyone, whether they are a musician or not, has favourite songs, songs with which we identify, which speak personally to us and can place it right back in time to when we first heard them or offer comfort in times of stress. What is it about this worldwide phenomenon, which is there in every culture, every form of music across the ages and across the globe? Why do people sing? What makes song such a unique human and musical phenomenon? What can we learn through song about human history and about ourselves? This course will change students' whole perception of song, even songs which are their own personal favourites.

What makes song such a unique human and musical phenomenon? What can we learn through song about human history and about ourselves? This course will change students' whole perception of song, even songs which are their own personal favourites.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Perceive and write about familiar and favourite songs in a new way through placing them in historical, sociological and biographical contexts and analyse the relationship between music and text, using technical terms to show more skillfully how meaning is reflected in music Explore the Art of Song (Women�s Songs and Voices; Songs of Travel; Love Songs) across many different cultures from the 18th to 21st centuries To show how our perception of song has remained constant and how it has changed by identifying recurring musical tropes, gestures and themes To leave the course with a new understanding of the centrality of song within human society

	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes Work presented for the first time in August without approved mitigating circumstances will be capped at 40%.
