Credits: 30
Semester: Year-Long
Department: BUSINESS

Overview Overview

The dissertation is one of the ‘summer pathways’ available to students undertaking an MSc degree within the School of Business. An MSc dissertation provides students with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate highly specialised knowledge which is at the forefront of an area of work or study, as the basis for original thinking and research. An MSc dissertation is distinguished from other forms of writing by its focus on analysing and understanding situations via a theoretical lens. An MSc dissertation evaluates literature, makes comparisons, seeks explanations and offers conclusions all of which can be used to better understand the case in context, as well as the theory in general. MSc dissertations generally involve some practical primary data gathering by students, but can also centre on secondary sources.

Students completing an MSc dissertation will: identify a suitable research topic; set research objectives; locate, organise and evaluate the relevant authoritative literature; devise an appropriate research methodology; gather and analyse primary data; and offer relevant conclusions, recommendations and implications for the theory and future research.
