Module RESTORATIVE PRACTICE IN SCHOOLS

Module code: MC616
Credits: 10
Semester: 2
Department: KENNEDY INSTITUTE
International: No
Overview Overview

This module delivers knowledge and skills students to work restoratively in the school community and with the wider community and families. The programme’s focus is on transformative learning relationships with students, parents, staff, Boards of Management and the wider society. Students learn through presentations, discussion, skills practice and critically analyzing the principles, theories and philosophy of a restorative approach. A whole school methodology is taken in partnership with members of the school community while also focusing on the transference of these skills to the family and wider community.
The module places Restorative Practices in a historical and universal context, specifically examining the processes and practices of language, circles, conferencing and interventions that allow a school community to enhance their positive ethos and move towards being a Restorative School. Students learn the skills base of these practices through interactions with practitioners in schools/community who are actively promoting restorative practices in their work and also through reflective learning, gathering evidence and personal practice. Students support each other’s learning through self-reflection and critical feedback of skills practice in the classroom in their own workplace. Students visit a school with a restorative culture and learn directly from staff and children about their experience.
