	Overview
	Intellectual property is concerned with creations of the mind, including songs, books, inventions, and logos. Intellectual property rights grant the owner an exclusive right which allows them to prevent others from using or copying these creations. Intellectual property laws attempt to balance these exclusive rights with the benefits that these creations provide to society. This module will provide a detailed examination of the legal protection of intellectual property rights encompassing such matters as copyright, trade marks, and patents as well as the law governing the registration of such rights and the penalties for their infringement. Any aspect of this module may be changed in any given academic year, subject to the discretion of the module lecturer.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Display an in-depth knowledge of the requirements that must be met for recognition of a patent and a trade mark as well as the process by which they may be registered. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles relating to the establishment of copyright by an author over material and be able to distinguish between uses that infringe such copyright and those that do not. Examine the policy reasons for the limitation on such rights and debate the utility and effectiveness of such limitations. Interpret a given hypothetical situation in light of IP law principles, summarise the main legal issues involved and construct an opinion as to the legal protection afforded to the IP right in issue.
