	Overview
	The objective of this module is to provide students with knowledge of the constitutional and institutional foundations of the European Union (EU) legal order, and with thorough understanding of EU institutions and procedures. The course also aims to equip students with the tools necessary to discuss the impact of EU law on the national legal orders of the Member States. The module addresses a range of different topics, and focuses on the role of the EU institutions and the interaction among the political institutions in the law making process, the sources of EU law, the role and jurisdiction of the Court of Justice and the judicial remedies available to institutions, Member States and private parties, including the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Outline and comment upon the constitutional development of the EU with reference to the principal founding and amending Treaties. Identify the main institutions of the EU, outline their structure, functions and powers and critically analyse the relationship between them. Outline and evaluate the primary and secondary sources of EU law and the legislative processes by which such law is created. Describe the nature of EU law and analyse its position in the domestic legal order, with particular emphasis on the doctrines of supremacy and direct effect. Understand how EU law is enforced by way of private (state liability) and public enforcement (Commission enforcement). Be familiar with the key procedures before the Court of Justice of the EU, their advantages and drawbacks. Have a basic understanding of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU and what distinguishes it from the European Convention on Human Rights.
