	Overview
	The course examines the �local dimension of Ireland�s past�. The course aims to provide participants interested in local history with an opportunity to obtain formal training in the subject. This course sets out to provide students with a methodological approach to the research and writing of local history. This certificate level course is offered by the Department of History, Maynooth University.

This course sets out to provide students with a methodological approach to the research and writing of local history. 	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Understand the concept and meaning of local history and recognise the central themes and challenges that historians face Be aware of the distinction between primary and secondary sources and be conscious of the importance of context in interpretation of source materials Identify repositories of interest for the completion of a local history research project. Compile a short bibliography of relevant secondary sources in order to conduct a literature review of the current academic discussion of local history Design a research proposal that meets the approval of the course tutor containing a clear statement of the aims of a local history study Locate relevant source materials for the completion of a research project Evaluate different types of sources and determine their value for a research project Use academic and stylistic conventions appropriately and consistently to complete the research project that meets the criteria of the discipline of history

Learning Outcomes
