Module GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE AND DEVELOPMENT

Module code: KD214
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
International: Yes
Overview Overview

Concern about global and local environmental change has long been the focus of International Development studies and is central to the rhetoric and objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Challenges of climate change, loss of biodiversity and natural resource degradation have become an imperative for Development practitioners and policy makers.
There is widespread recognition that social and economic change can affect the environment.
The flip side of this is that a degraded environment makes the poor more vulnerable and impedes wellbeing.
Meanwhile at the local level there are numerous conflicts of interest over access to, and control of, natural resources.
Many communities around the world are resisting what the see as inappropriate forms of development that negatively impact upon their natural environment and livelihoods.
No analysis of environmental change can take place without making explicit the social, economic and political dimensions and drivers.
This module aims to provide participants with an overview of global environmental changes, challenges and responses, and to facilitate participants understanding and analysis of the inter-relationship between environmental and development processes.
