	Overview
	This module will review some of the biggest global development challenges we face as a planet and in our societies. It will examine questions such as why some countries are rich, and others are poor? How vital are states and state legitimacy in promoting development? Given climate and environmental challenges, what are the alternatives to economic growth, and will they be popular? How much progress has the world made, and how can we measure it? Are the SDGs being achieved? As the world population slows, how will it impact countries, and what policy responses are required? Finally, who rules the world? What roles do the UN and other international organisations play in global development?

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Understand the roles of geography, history and institutions in state development. Have examined the importance of states and state legitimacy in promoting socio-economic development. Have looked at the debates around the need to replace current economic growth systems and the proposed alternatives - Green Growth and Degrowth? Have reviewed the SDGs and the progress and challenges remaining to 2030. Have an appreciation for global poverty and inequality trends and steps to reduce their incidence. Have examined current demographic trends and related policy responses. Understand global governance and the roles played by international institutions in addressing global development issues.

Learning Outcomes

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes Repeat students must resit the repeat assignment in the Autumn and submit any outstanding continuous assessment by a date before the Autumn deadline, which will be specified by the department. Students are responsible for familiarising themselves with this deadline. If students do not submit by the deadline, the existing continuous assessment mark will be carried forward to the Autumn. No continuous assessment work will be accepted after this date. This will apply except upon presentation of a medical certificate covering the relevant period or in other extremely extenuating circumstances, which must be communicated to, and accepted by, the lecturer prior to, or immediately after, the relevant deadline.
