On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

Understand the principles of preservation and ‘best practice’ in the cleaning, handling and storage of paper, as the principal archival format for historical collections. LO1 (knowledge)

Distinguish between preservation and conservation, and better understand the role, and limitations, of the archivist in this specialised field. LO2 (knowledge)

Plan and undertake a cleaning programme in respect of bound volumes and loose paper LO3 (skills)

Construct a safe storage environment (a phase box) for a bound volume, using archival-quality materials. LO4 (skills)

Engage in the ongoing discussion on the practicalities involved in the adoption of international standards in relation to preservation of paper and of non-standard archives LO5 (competences)
