	Overview
	This module will consider various aspects of the social, economic, political and cultural history of country houses from growth in the eighteenth century to decline in the twentieth. It is also intended to introduce students to significant issues affecting the country house in the twenty-first century, focusing on topics such as the presentation and promotion of historic properties as competitive attractions in the heritage and cultural tourism markets.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: � have a knowledge of the reasons for the historical growth and decline of country houses. � have an awareness of their material culture and landscape design � have an understanding of the major themes and issues that shape the future of country houses � be able to identify primary sources available for the study of country houses and landed estates, and how to assess their strengths and weaknesses. � be able to engage with historiographical debates and to develop an understanding of historical research � demonstrate in their written work an understanding of the main trends and factors that have shaped the history of the country house and be able to present cogent, coherent arguments.
