On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• demonstrate and apply understanding and knowledge of the key events and themes in the recent history of Yugoslavia and the Balkan region

• develop ability to express complex arguments and ideas about contemporary Balkans, both orally and in written form, in clear accessible prose

• identify, locate, evaluate and employ a range of primary source material

• demonstrate the capacity for independent thought in the handling of both primary and secondary sources

• critically engage with the relevant main historiographical debates, and develop their own ideas and positions in relation to them
