	Overview
	This is an intensive, week-long programme designed to introduce participants to Defence Studies subjects and the history of fortifications, military technology while also discussing issues related to commemoration and memory of conflict. For the 2015-16 academic year, the module will take place at the Royal Dutch Military Academy in Breda in the Netherlands. As part of the programme, there will be a series of associated field trips. Participants must cover the cost of their own flights, transportation and meals. Places are limited. For further information please contact Dr David Murphy (david.murphy@nuim.ie).

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: (Knowledge): understand the historical context of European security and defence issues. (Knowledge): appreciate the ways war memorials are instrumentalised for political purposes. (Skills): identify, examine, and analyse historical evidence, and organise it in a coherent argument. (Skills): read historical archaeology and sites of memory and comprehensively resolve them in a problem oriented discussion. (Competence): demonstrate independent judgement based on historical evidence.

Assessment

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	The essay component of the module may be submitted up to 1 August, and may be capped at 40%. There will be no repeat of other continous assessment components. Marks received during the semester in respect of in-class tests, presentations etc., will be carried over.
