Humans are no longer mere passive observers of environmental change but are now participants acting to shape our future. This module will encourage students to think critically about how one fundamental aspect of the environment, the climate system, is likely to respond. Students will be facilitated in developing a rigorous understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts of climate science.
This module explores the complex physical basis of climate change with an emphasis on understanding the key natural and human drivers of change. Students will develop an understanding of the most up-to-date climate science through investigation of reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Synthesising evidence from theory, observations, paleoclimate, and climate models, students will examine how climate variability at timescales from weeks to millions of years underpins our understanding of future change. Students will be trained in the analysis of climate data in order to develop practical skills and knowledge of how to interpret a climate change signal. The knowledge and skills developed during this module will be furthered by an exploration of the links between science, policy formulation and decision making.
