	Overview
	This module offers an introduction to different aspects of life within a University Geography Department, with especial reference to Maynooth Geography Department. Students will see what Geography lecturers/researchers do, what they research and what they write, in addition to gaining a better appreciation of the diverse nature of Geography as a subject. This module will also explore, and begin to develop a critical appreciation of, writings in Geography. It will examine different structures of writing, including book chapters, journal papers and policy reports, and establish how arguments are formulated and constructed. It will draw out the selection of appropriate research methods, which may subsequently inform the students' research dissertations.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Know more about Maynooth Geography Department; in particular, the individual geographers in Maynooth Geography Department and what they do. understand how Geographers do research and how different styles of research are more appropriate to different branches/sub-disciplines of Geography. understand how Geographers write peer reviewed academic books and journal articles/papers. know how to access, and read, peer reviewed academic books and journal articles/papers.

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes Students may opt to do supplemental continuous assessment over the Summer (details will normally be posted on the GY209 Moodle page, but students should also contact the lecturer), but will have to surrender any continuous assessment marks earned over the regular lecturing year if they opt to do so. Otherwise, the continuous assessment mark will be carried forward to the Autumn, without scope for improvement. In exceptional circumstances, students may be allowed to complete, and submit, some of the work that they did not submit during the regular academic year, if there was a valid reason for them not having completed that work at that time; the marks for which will then be added to any continuous assessment marks (for other work) that were earned during the regular academic year. Only those students who have officially registered to repeat/resit the module in the Autumn will be allowed to submit supplemental continuous assessment.
