	Overview
	In this module, students will critically reflect on the French language as an object of enquiry. We will explore two main topics. First, we will analyse the grammar and structure of French, with particular attention to key points of comparison and contrast with English. Second, students will deepen their knowledge of and competency in spoken French through study of the patterns of its normative sound system. In sum, these investigations will provide insight into linguistic processes involved with translation and communication as well as a foundation for future study in linguistics.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Describe the patterns of the normative sound system of French. Identify some of the major variations in pronunciation of contemporary French. Apply knowledge of French phonology in order to improve their accuracy in normative spoken French. Summarise the key structural differences between French and English. Apply knowledge of the structure of French to produce grammatical correct sentences.

Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
Penalties: late submission of assessed course work or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. Assessed coursework or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the relevant submission deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
