	Overview
	Topics addressed within this module include the economic and social importance of the tourism generally and in particular the Irish equine leisure & tourism industry. The Irish equine leisure and tourism sector will also be looked at in the context of the international leisure and tourism industry. It will review critically the structure of the sector including size, nature, organisation, regulation and educational requirements of the Irish equine leisure & tourism industry relative to our main competitors. It will evaluate and critically review the work of the governing bodies within the sector, Failte Ireland and Tourism Ireland and the other relevant industry bodies who are involved in developing and promoting the sector. It will also discuss the various disciplines and activities which make up the different sectors of the industry, in particular it will examine the various �pathway� organisations into equine leisure and explore their potential for development in the future. Students will learn about and have the opportunity to discuss current and/or topical issues of concern with staff and industry experts.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Define the size, nature, organisation and various disciplines and activities that make up the Irish equine leisure and tourism industry relative to the general leisure and tourism industry in Ireland Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of both the thoroughbred and sport horse leisure and tourism sectors relative to our main competitors Assess the educational requirements of the equine leisure and tourism sectors Examine the role of the governing bodies and relevant industry and associated organisations within the equine leisure and tourism industry Appraise the various policies which have been formulated to increase attendance (participants and spectators) both in Ireland and abroad at equine events Evaluate the international and Irish leisure and tourism industries and their potential for growth in the future Examine the potential of the Irish equine leisure and tourism sector to develop and grow within the context of the Irish and greater international leisure and tourism industry.
