	Overview
	This module will encourage students to think reflectively about the use of contemporary cultural theory with a view to developing their own independent research projects. The first part of the module will take the form of a series of lectures on cultural and literary theory, encompassing broad topics such as, but not necessarily restricted to, gender, Marxism and postcolonial theory. The second part will take a seminar form in which students will choose between a series of special topics on particular authors or themes with a view to writing an extended research essay in this general area. This part of the module will also deal with practical skills of critical essay writing including matters such as electronic sources and archives, handling alternative views and methodologies, and matters of editing, revision and professional presentation.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of complex modes of contemporary cultural theory Demonstrate an strong ability to assimilate and scrutinise critical readings Show an ability to appraise, identify and use varied contemporary critical and theoretical approaches to literature and culture Participate in seminar discussions; debate issues related to cultural context and socio-political circumstances; Demonstrate high quality verbal and written expression; the ability to make clear points in a lucid grammatical and confident manner. Write an essay on a chosen topic, demonstrating the ability to integrate source material and critical readings; synthesise arguments; justify critical approaches and opinions.

	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes Where a student has passed the essay component and repeats the examination component of a module, the essay component will be carried forward from the previous attempt at the module. Repeat students who fail the essay component may submit all such material by the first Tuesday in August. Students without proven certified medical or other valid reasons must submit an essay of acceptable standard (C or higher); however, the mark awarded will be capped at 40%. Students will not be allowed to register to repeat externally for this module if they have not satisfactorily completed the seminar component of this module. Students wishing to register to repeat externally for this module thus require authorization from the Head of Department.
