On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the key theoretical approaches and concepts in literary and cultural criticism;

Show an ability to analyse and compare a variety of theoretical texts and approaches;

Analyse the potential uses and problems of particular theoretical approaches to language, culture, representation and literature;

Develop and write a research essay on a chosen topic or topics, demonstrating the ability to integrate source material and critical readings; synthesise arguments; justify critical approaches and opinions; construct a coherent, substantiated argument;

Show capacity to write clear, grammatically correct prose;

Identify and use relevant subject-specific electronic resources and other library and archival resources.
