• Derive the basic equations for a range of modulation schemes.
• Describe the time-domain and frequency domain characteristics of a range of modulation schemes.
• Sketch and explain the operation of one or more basic circuits for performing modulation/demodulation.
• Quantify and explain the effect of noise on communication systems.
• Calculate the channel capacity of a dispersive channel using the water-filling theorem.
• Describe different channel access methods used in wireless communications (TDMA, FDMA).
• Investigate and explain a communication system not described in class.

• Penalties: Missed laboratories cannot be repeated, in general. Late submission of assignments will be subject to a penalty of 10% of the assessment grade for each day (or part thereof) overdue.

• 1 x 2 hour written examination (Autumn). The continuous assessment mark is carried forward as there is no facility for repeating the continuous assessment elements of the course.
