Overview Overview

The objective of this module is to support students to actively engage in and critically reflect on building positive relationships. The development of positive practices of proactive, communication, through modelling and role play will be demonstrated. These demonstrations present practical ways to establish and maintain a positive and effective learning environment for all students in their care. The theoretical underpinnings of the science of relationships are explored in tandem with school-based experience /practice in a post-primary school. Students will develop communication and relationship building skills and will be given the opportunity to demonstrate and assess these through participation in cooperative learning groups, peer evaluation and practice in their placement schools.

Working as reflective practitioner’s student teachers will develop skills in building positive sustainable relationships by evaluating how they communicate. This module will seek to scaffold this communication by demonstrating a value based restorative approach to building and maintaining relationships. Student teachers will be given the opportunity to work in restorative circles and supported to practice restorative questions and conversations. The programme will enable participants to reflect on their emotional intelligence, use of empathy and understanding of fairness. In studying anger, blame and shame student teachers will evaluate their ability to problem solve and transform how they communicate while also examining the challenges of implementing these techniques.
